Big Thunder Mountain closed for several months for maintenance

The iconic roller coaster Big Thunder Mountain will be temporarily closed from 6 January 2025 for a large-scale renovation. The attraction is expected to be open to the public again in early summer 2025.

The Walt Disney Imagineering Paris and Design & Delivery teams have been working for more than a year to prepare for this major maintenance project, in collaboration with the Maintenance and Central Workshop teams. This renovation is necessary to keep the attraction, which is open year-round, in top condition and ensure the quality of the experience, while respecting the original creative vision and the rich history closely associated with Frontierland®.

Extensive work on wood

A key focus of the renovation is to preserve the authentic Wild West atmosphere of Frontierland®. The Imagineers have conducted an in-depth study of the many woodwork in the attraction and station. Certain structures will be replaced with custom-made, more durable elements, manufactured by the Design & Delivery and Central Workshop teams. These new parts will be carefully painted to preserve the aged look of the gold mine. Iconic elements of the mountain, such as the famous Mill Camp tower and the queue area, will also be refurbished.

Animals and plants restored to their former glory

All figures in the attraction, such as goat Billy and the mules, will be fully restored to their original glory at Central Workshops. The planting will also receive a refurbishment, with the replanting of cacti to complete the authentic landscape of the North American deserts. For this, the Walt Disney Imagineering Paris teams were able to draw on Big Thunder Mountain's archives dating back to its opening in 1992 to ensure the utmost care for these essential elements of attraction history.

During the closure, teams will be working hard to ensure that Big Thunder Mountain is accessible again from the start of the summer season, with optimal conditions for both guests and Cast Members.
